It seems that some people on this board experience pain and burning, and some don't. Unfortunately, my nose has burned for the past several months. This has been the worst of my ENS symptoms. Basically, it feels as if someone has dipped their finger in hot sauce, crammed their finger into my nostrils, and left me to burn 24/7. Anyway, for those of you who have this symptom, I want you to know that Lyrica is definitely helping me. I've been on it for about three months now. I take a 100 mg pill three times a day. It took about two weeks to get into my system, but it's in there now, and my burning sensation has been reduced by about 50%. My nose still burns, but it's not as intense, and there are times that I don't feel the burning at all. The Lyrica might make me a little groggy, but I don't see any major side effects. As far as I'm concerned, this has been a miracle drug.
I think the burning comes from damaged nerves -- basically the nerves interpret any stimuli (i.e. breathing) as pain. I still haven't figured out to what degree dryness plays a role. I think that it does, because my nose is very dry due to the idiot ENT taking out almost all of my MTs. So, I may go the implant route at some point to increase the moisture in my nose.
Anyway, I just wanted to let people know that the Lyrica helps (at least for me) with the burning. If you have this issue, I'd recommend seeing a good pain specialist.
I should also add that I am on a very low dose of Amitriptyline. This is like the oldest anti-depressent. I'm actually not depressed, but the pain specialist said that this medicine was also good for calming injured nerves. I take one 25 mg pill at night--not enough to do anything for someone depressed, but enough to help the Lyrica calm the nerves.
The combination of the two drugs is really great.
Best wishes,
